INTERNATIONAL PROJECT GUIDANCE

Planning permission and building permits

Plan your glass roof with confidence — from your first idea to the right technical information for your location.

Plan with confidence

A brighter space starts with a clear plan

Bring more light, fresh air and flexibility to your home, garden room or restaurant terrace. A made-to-measure Bentech roof offers shelter when you need it and opens to the sky when the weather is right.

For projects in the USA, Canada, the UK and beyond, we help you develop the roof specification and discuss the drawings your local project team may need.

YOUR LOCATION, YOUR PROJECT

Start with the requirements where you plan to build

A glass roof, patio cover or sunroom may need planning, zoning or building approval. The route depends on your location, property and proposed use. Confirm the requirements with the authority responsible for your site before finalising the design or arranging installation.

United States

Start with the city or county building and planning department responsible for your property. Ask about permits, zoning, setbacks and the technical documents needed for a glass roof, patio cover or sunroom. Your local design professional can confirm the applicable codes and any state or local amendments.

Canada

Building requirements are set by provincial or territorial authorities and are often administered locally. Check with the authority responsible for your site about building permits, zoning and required drawings. Ask which local snow, wind and energy requirements apply to the intended use of your space.

United Kingdom

In England, planning permission and building regulations approval are separate checks, and a project may need both. Contact your local planning authority and the appropriate building control body. Requirements and procedures differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so use the guidance for the UK nation where you are building.

Europe and other destinations

Start with the planning and building authority responsible for your property. Ask your local architect or engineer which approvals, technical standards and product documents apply to your project. We work with your project team to discuss the roof specification and the information available for assessment.

What to check before you build

Confirm the proposed use, overall dimensions, height, boundaries and connection to the existing building. Ask about structural loads, overhead safety glazing, drainage, fire safety, ventilation and energy performance where relevant. An opening roof does not automatically remove the need for permission. Keep written confirmation of the approval route and any required inspections.

From concept to drawings

Turn your ideas into a clear project brief

Send your location, photographs, approximate dimensions and existing drawings to info@bentech.se. Tell us whether the space will be open-sided, enclosed or heated, and how you intend to use it.

We can discuss roof layouts, sections, glazing specifications and fixing details to help your architect, engineer or contractor develop the project. The scope and cost of drawing support are agreed in advance. Any locally required engineering calculations, professional sign-off and permit applications should be coordinated by your local project team.

Site-specific wind, snow and other relevant loads must be confirmed before the roof specification is finalised. Bentech’s product information supports the design process; approval is determined by the authority responsible for your site.
